"A sense of magic and mystery from her own interests in the Gnostics, Ancient Egypt and magic itself, and from her wonderment at life and death, makes her writing unique. Born in Toronto, Gwendolyn MacEwen () began writing and publishing while still in her teens, eventually publishing over 20 books in her lifetime.
In her early twenties, she was briefly married to the poet Milton Acorn, who was 19 years older than her. Gwendolyn MacEwen has been publishing poetry and prose fiction for more than twenty years and has carved what appears to be a separate niche for herself in our literary history.
Various critics along the way have tried to locate her work in relation to what has been accepted as typical of the mainstream of Canadian writing sincebut the attempt has achieved only qualified success.
